'We went mental on the lawn... which was quite nice': Ed Sheeran recalls the moment girlfriend Cherry Seaborn inspired new ballad Perfect

His seemingly unbreakable bond with girlfriend Cherry Seaborn proved to be a source of inspiration for many of the tracks on critically acclaimed new album Divide.

But Ed Sheeran, 26, admits one particular song conjures fond memories of the pretty financial consultant he first met while they were both students at Thomas Mills High School in Suffolk.

'Perfect was the first song that I wrote for the album - it was inspired by Cherry,’ he told Us Magazine of the 24-year old's impact on his new music.

‘The line that goes, “Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song” was about when we were in Ibiza listening to Future’s March Madness literally not wearing any shoes and going mental on the lawn, which was quite a nice time.

‘I didn’t see her first reaction to the song because she lived in New York at the time. So I just emailed it to her but she did really like it.’

Ed's devotion to Cherry was never more evident in February, when he chivalrously loaned her his shoes after they danced so hard inside Warner Music and Cîroc Vodka's London bash that she snapped her £1395 Andaloulou Nappa Christian Louboutin boots.

'I learned to prioritize what’s really important,' he said. 'I’ve got a strong group of mates and a wonderful girlfriend who I grew up with. I’ve got a house where I grew up. So I’ve kept my roots. It had all helped me to stay grounded.'

That grounded attitude has been crucial in helping Ed think carefully about the prospect of marriage and children with Cherry - but he admits it might be some time before he becomes a father.

'I want kids but just because you are ready doesn’t mean it has to happen,' he said. 'I think you could be ready for five to 10 years and then choose the right time. But I feel positive about it.'
