Louisa Gould's fatal sacrifice during World War 2

Despite the brutal suppressions of those dark days, there were extraordinary stories of heroism and humanity, too, and none more so than that of Louisa Gould (top right), a stoic, middle-aged shopkeeper. One of her two sons, Edward, had won a scholarship to Oxford, but was then killed serving with the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean in 1941. It is hard not to think that the Russian escapee she took in, Feodor Burriy (bottom right), a pilot in his early 20s, must have reminded her of Edward. Seeing in him the vitality of the brave and brilliant son she had lost in such harrowing circumstances, she cleaned Feodor up, bandaged the wounds inflicted on his back in prison by the Nazis, and dressed him in her son's old clothes. Today, her heroism is not forgotten, for her great-niece Jenny Lecoat, a television scriptwriter, has turned her story into the film Another Mother's Son (left), which had its premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London's West End last night. Ronan Keating plays her brother Harold Le Druillenec (inset).

Witch-hunt lawyer Phil Shiner goes bankrupt

Shamed Phil Shiner (pictured) has transferred his £330,000 Birmingham home (inset) to his daughters, as the Government pursue claims against him for bringing baseless war crimes claims against UK troops. Shiner's firm made more than £1.6million pursuing unfounded torture and murder claims that cost the public purse £31million to investigate. The Ministry of Defence was also poised to claim for the millions it spent defending its soldiers in court. But Shiner has now been declared bankrupt, which could make it harder to recover these costs. His now defunct law firm - Public Interest Lawyers - brought most of the 3,380 allegations of wrongdoing referred to the Iraq Historical Allegations Team. The disciplinary tribunal heard that his cases, which led to the £31million Al-Sweady public inquiry, were found to be baseless and had a devastating effect on the soldiers who were falsely accused.

North Korea's use of missiles threatens global flashpoint

Will Kim Jong-un, latest incarnation of the cult dynasty that has ruled the Communist northern half of Korea since 1948, exchange bluff for action and, one day, deploy his small but lethal nuclear arsenal? That terrifying possibility moved a step nearer this month when, without warning, Kim Jong-un ordered a salvo of missiles to be fired towards his other nervous neighbour, Japan. President Donald Trump has stated that 'every option was on the table' when it comes to North Korean aggression. While the phrase was meant to reassure, many Japanese, and South Koreans worry that the Americans are contemplating pre-emptive strikes on North Korean military sites - which would indeed place them in the crosshairs of retaliatory attacks. Before leaving office, Barack Obama warned Donald Trump that North Korea was the gravest security risk he would face as president. Every day that has passed since the inauguration confirms this assessment.

She was adopted by one couple, then sent to France to live with another before Prue and husband Rayne met her. Prue writes: 'Li-Da was, if anything, too good a child, conscious of her luck and suffering from classic survivor guilt, which she later channelled into making films about Cambodia and working for charities to help the country.' Only now at 69 do I see what a fool I was to hate my body

TRICIA CUSDEN: As a successful entrepreneur - I launched a thriving make-up line aimed at the over-50s, which made me my fortune - I'm used to seeing photographs of myself in magazines and newspapers. But I rarely look back at those from when I was younger. In each I look so slim, attractive even - and yet, throughout the six decades they span, my relationship with my body has been awful. If I wasn't berating my physical form because my hips were too wide, my thighs and ankles too chunky and my breasts too small, I was trying to control its size through punishing diets. Dear God, what a shame it is to reach your 69th year remembering, as if it were yesterday, how overweight and depressingly unattractive you felt as a young woman. Only to finally look back on a pile of photographs and realise that actually, you were slim and lovely after all.

Twitter users SLAM news of Noel Fielding as new GBBO host

After months of speculation, Noel Fielding (main left) and Sandi Toksvig (top right) were confirmed as the new hosts of The Great British Bake Off on Thursday. The pair will replace original BBC presenting duo Mel and Sue when the iconic baking tent is rebooted on Channel 4 later this year. While culinary legend Prue Leith (bottom right) was the expected successor for iconic Mary Berry alongside the only returning castmember, Paul Hollywood (centre), the odd choice of surreal comic Fielding has been met with derision from die-hard Bake Off fans. Tweets poured in after the news was announced, with some branding the casting as the 'worst decision' ever while others asked if it was an early April Fools' joke. Great British Bake Off ended its seven series run with the BBC in September after they were unable to match rival broadcaster Channel 4's reported bid of £75m.

KATIE HOPKINS: Merkel and Trump could be productive

They could not be more different. Trump wears his heart on his sleeve.
