Paris really IS the City of Love! French capital is the most romantic in the world as Parisians reveal they have twice as many lovers as Londoners

  •  Average Parisian has NINETEEN lovers in their lifetime, compared with 9 in UK
  •  44 percent of Parisians had slept with someone 'without knowing their name'
  •  29 percent of Parisians had taken part in threesome, higher than rest of France

The reputation of Paris as the City of Love has been given a huge boost by a new survey that shows its residents have more than twice as many lovers as Londoners.

While modest Brits settle for an average nine partners in a lifetime, the red blooded Parisians have at least 19, confirming their capital as the most romantic in the world.

A combination of beautiful buildings, sumptuous restaurants and cafes, and a great artistic tradition put all residents in the mood for love.

It has also produced some of the biggest sex symbols in history, including Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve.

More than that, the relaxed atmosphere in the city means it is easy and safe to find an attractive partner at pretty much any time.

'Paris offers numerous possibilities to meet people while guaranteeing a certain anonymity and great freedom of movement,' reads the study.

Some 44 per cent of those questioned also confessed to having slept with someone 'without knowing their name'.

The Ifop survey is entitled 'Paris, City of Light, City of Debauchery' and confirms the French capital's reputation as 'the place of sexual liberty par excellence'.

The figure of 19 sexual partners compares to a national average in France of 11, and only nine in London.

An Opinium Research survey for The Observer in 2014 showed the average Brit has 10 sexual partners, with Londoners having one less.

Parisians also appear to be far more adventurous between the sheets – 29 per cent have taken part in threesomes, compared to 16 per cent in other parts of the country.

Almost a quarter – 22 per cent – have also taken part in an orgy, which it defined as writhing around with more than three others.

Eighteen per cent of those living in the city have also visited swingers' clubs, where partners are swapped in an instant.

Open air sex: 44 percent of Parisians said they had made love in parks, in squares or in the boulevards of the city

There is also strong evidence of Parisians making love everywhere and anywhere – some 44 percent of youngsters say they have frolicked in parks, and on squares and boulevards.

Ifop spokesman Francois Kraus said Paris 'clearly comes across as an area of emancipation and privileged freedom.'

He said sexuality was 'less controlled' than in other parts of the world, and that people felt relaxed about 'transgressing taboos'.

The number of men in the capital who have used prostitutes is also much higher than the national average – 38 per cent compared to 22 per cent.

While Paris is full of Internet escort agencies, old-fashioned prostitutes still walk the streets in areas close to the Gare du Nord Eurostar hub. Prostitution is not illegal in France, although pimping is.

As far as sexual orientation is concerned, almost 20 per cent of Parisian men declare themselves to be gay or bisexual, compared to 11 per cent for the rest of the country.

The Ifop survey, which was carried out for the CAM4 dating website, also found 43 percent of Paris's two million plus population is single, compared to 33 percent in the rest of the country.

Longstanding couples account for just 25 percent of the population, compared to 41 percent in more conservative parts of France.

Those that are in a relationship, meanwhile, are much more likely to be unfaithful, with some 58 percent confessing to have cheated on their partner, compared to 48 per cent nationally.

The Ifop survey, conducted between September and October last year, was based on interviews with 2007 adults making up a representative sample of Parisians.
