Seven years since his last album and the Space Cowboys appetite for sci-fi funk and disco is undiminished. Jay Kay has added Daft Punk robotics to the mix, but otherwise sticks to the retro rhythms that have served him so well. Its hard not to be swayed by the smooth, Latin soul of Summer Girl despite a line that rhymes Limoncello with special fellow.

Blackburns Charlotte OConnor strikes a balance between confessional fare and dusky dance beats on her second album. With her towering voice pitched between Emeli Sandé and Lana Del Rey, opening track Blackout is a sultry statement of intent and she reveals a strong romantic streak on Medicine Man.

The Ride (Nelstar)

Nelly studied sewing, ceramics and drama and worked in a record shop before writing The Ride. The change has done her good. She voices her distaste for fame on Carnival Games, but her poppy instincts are intact on Sticks And Stones and the electro ballad Tap Dancing. Producer John Congletons punky poise and heavy beats lend her songs an edge that was once missing.

Things Ive Never Said (Cookie)

Singer-songwriter Frances shows maturity well beyond her years on a debut album rich in promise. The 23-year-old from Oxford examines the upheaval of moving to London on recent single No Matter and ventures into Carole King terrain with her own piano backing. Gentle ballads dominate, but there are attractive detours into electro-pop and funk.

Vera Lynn 100 (Decca)

With Dame Vera celebrating her 100th birthday on Monday, this adds fresh orchestrations to well-loved songs. Tinkering with treasured memories isnt usually advisable, but the sensitivity here does the Forces Sweetheart proud. Sailing is a questionable inclusion, but Im Forever Blowing Bubbles revisits her East End roots and Alfie Boe duets on Well Meet Again.

JOE COCKER

The Life Of A Man (Sony)

When Cocker died at his Colorado home in 2014, British music lost one of its most distinctive voices. The Sheffield Soul Shouter was a husky hero of the classic rock era, and this posthumous collection features With A Little Help From My Friends, Delta Lady and Up Where We Belong. There are rousing moments from 2012s Fire It Up, plus a mellow take on Allen Toussaints Performance that shows he could be tender as well as tough.
