While he has been making women's hearts beat faster for years as a television doctor, this star gets his own pumping by hitting the gas on a pricey sports car.

Patrick Dempsey and race driver Mark Webber put one of Porsche's top cars through its paces in Germany on Saturday.

The 51-year-old actor and the 40-year-old Australian sportsman heralded the opening of the sports car company's new driving attraction on the German island of Sylt.

While most people known Patrick as McDreamy on Grey's Anatomy, he is an accomplished race car driver and even owns his own team.

For this reason he was all too happy to test out Porsche's new driving experience, Porsche auf Sylt, even if he let Mark take the wheel first.

The duo took a 911 Targa 4 GTS out for a spin before checking out some of the other vehicles at the new facility.

Getting a chance to just enjoy the speed rather than focusing on driving, Patrick could not stop smiling.

Mark is a Porsche Brand Ambassador and Patrick has long had an affinity with the German sports car.

Speaking to CNN about his passion for Porsche, he revealed the first time he fell in love with the car.

He said: 'It was a 1963 356. It was on the street in Santa Monica with a ''For Sale'' sign. I'd just finished a movie called Can't Buy Me Love, and I spent my entire paycheck on that car.'

His love affair has continued with the star and his team driving Porsches when they have entered the famed 24 hour race, Le Mans.

The actor explained to CNN: 'The whole concept and design behind Porsche was to go racing and performance. That's really the legacy.

'I like to drive them, and you want to look at them because they are sculptural, they're beautiful to look at...

'You look at the Porsche line, it's just so identifiable, and it's so iconic.'

Patrick did slow his racing career a little last year to focus on his family after reunited with his nearly-ex-wife Jillian Fink.

However, from the look on his face as Mark negotiated the race track's turns looks like more racing than acting might be in Patrick's future.
