'It's great to know how old I am': Hollywood legend Doris Day, 95, discovers she is TWO YEARS OLDER than she thought

They say that you should never ask a woman her age.

So it was a surprise not just for the public, but for Doris Day herself, when it emerged that the Pillow Talk actress turned 95 today, when it had been held she was 93.

The mistake only came to light when a copy of Day’s birth certificate showed that she was born on April 3, 1922 and not in 1924.

But if the lost years had been cause for any concern, Day was quick to shrug off the years joking that she had never ‘paid much attention’, to her age.

‘I’ve always said that age is just a number and I have never paid much attention to birthdays, but it’s great to finally know how old I really am,’ Day said in a statement.

And now the mystery as to how the mix up occurred has deepened thanks to the copy of Day’s birth certificate from Ohio’s Office of Vital Statistics, in the United States, which showed she was born Doris Mary Kappelhoff, two years before.

Her spokesman added to the speculation after it emerged that Day’s age had been wrongly recorded at an early audition and was never corrected.

‘There has long been speculation and rumours about Doris’ age and we get this question a lot, looks like we finally have the answer,’ said Charley Cullen Walters.

‘The story I have heard the most is that at one point Doris was up for a role when quite young and her age may have been miswritten on the audition form. We don’t know if that’s correct, but if so it could’ve simply stuck for all these years.’

‘She’s in excellent company with other vibrant Hollywood standouts lucky enough to reach that milestone year, including Betty White, a close friend, and Carl Reiner.’

He said Day and White had long joked about White being two years older.

‘Now we know that they are actually just a couple months apart, and turns out it’s an even bigger exciting landmark than we thought,’ Mr Walters said.

On previous birthdays, the star has said she did not care about her age but rather using the occasion.
