SPOILER ALERT: The Walking Dead loses survivor who makes ultimate sacrifice during season seven finale

The Walking Dead concluded its seventh season Sunday with a key member sacrificing herself by becoming a zombie.

Former firefighter Sasha Williams, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, took a poison pill instead of helping Negan.

The episode titled The First Day of the Rest of Your Life opened with imprisoned Sasha experiencing visions with her late boyfriend Abraham Ford who was brutally killed by Negan at the start of season seven..

Negan interrupted the dreamy scene.

'Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life,' Negan told her as planned to use her against Rick Grimes and his group of survivors.

Negan was aided by Eugene Porter who urged Rick and his group to join the Saviors.

Sasha was placed in a casket for the ride to Hilltop as part of Negan's plan get all the guns they collected and kill one of them.

She asked for a bottle of water for her casket trip and took a poison pill that Eugene had previoulsy given to her.

Sasha emerged as a zombie when Negan opened the casket and attacked him.

Jadis of the Scavengers betrayed Rick and shot him in the stomach before taking him prisoner.

Michonne meanwhile was fightting off one of the Scavengers in hand-to-hand combat.

'Rick, this is just going to make you sad,' Negan told him as his son Carl knelt before him.

Negan toyed with Rick while holding his favorite weapon Lucille as he threatened to kill Carl.

'You chose this. This is not a warning. This is punishment. I'm going to kill Carl now,' Negan told him.

Negam promised to kill Carl and then take Rick's hands.

Rick defiantly told Negan that he still planned on killing him.

'You're already dead,' Rick told him.

'Wow, Rick. OK,' Negan said.

Negan pulledup his bat and was about to strike Carl when King Ezekiel's tiger Shiva pounced on him.

A gun battle broke out as the Saviors and Kingdom fighters fired away at the Saviors and Scavengers.

The Saviours shot off a flare and deployed smoke bombs as they fled.

Negan asked Eugene how Sasha died and he claimed that she ran out of air.

'We are going to war,' Negan then told an assembled group of fighters.

Sasha was properly buried and Maggie gave her a voice-over eulogy.

Rick, Ezekiel and Maggie then addressed the remaining survivors as the season concluded.
