Queen Letizia proved she looks polished at any occasion when she flashed a smile for the cameras just moments after stepping off a long-haul flight.

The Spanish royal looked fresh-faced as she and husband King Felipe touched down in Tokyo today at the start of a four-day state visit to Japan. 

The couple looked in excellent spirits as they stepped off the plane before walking down a red carpet to a waiting car.

Proving that travelling is not an excuse to let style slip, Queen Letizia, 44, changed her outfit on board the plane. 

The mother-of-two boarded the aircraft in a classic beige trench coat and black stiletto shoes. 

Arriving in Tokyo, she wore a two-tone nude and black jacket over a knee-length leather skirt.

Keeping her hair and make-up look simple, Letizia wore her brunette locks loose around her shoulders. 

The four-day visit to Japan marks the royal couple's first to Asia since King Felipe ascended the throne. 

A statement released ahead of the trip said: 'This will be King Felipe and Queen Letizia's first state visit in Asia, which represents a special opportunity to strengthen the ties of friendship between Japan and Spain.'
