'I'm glad she got her happy ending': Sarah Harding reveals becoming a mum was pal Cheryl's 'ultimate goal' as she congratulates her on her newborn son

She made the exciting announcement that she had given birth to a baby son with partner Liam Payne last week.

And now Cheryl's bandmate Sarah Harding has come forward to congratulate her friend - revealing that becoming a mother had been the 33-year-old's 'ultimate goal'.

Speaking to OK! magazine, the former Girls Aloud star, 35, confessed Cheryl had been 'broody for years', and admitted she was delighted the star had finally found her 'happy ending' with the One Direction star.

After months of pregnancy speculation, Cheryl took to Instagram last week to announce she had welcomed a baby boy with boyfriend Liam, 23.

Having immediately taken to Twitter to congratulate her bandmate, Sarah has now gushed of her happiness for her close friend in an interview with OK! - revealing to fans that Cheryl had always wanted to be a mother.

She told the magazine: 'I'm really happy for her. Cheryl has been broody for years. I think she's wanted a baby since Kimberley [Walsh] first fell pregnant.'

Cheryl has now given birth, but while she was harbouring her baby bump, she really rook maternity dressing in her stride, sticking to her savvy sartorial ways throughout her pregnancy.

Just before Christmas she stepped out in a look put together for her by Anna Hughes-Chamberlain. Sporting a khaki ribbed bodycon dress by Alexander Wang teamed with a check panel Fendi coat, she accessorised her look with an embellished clutch and over-the-knee boots by Alexander McQueen.

Acknowledging that the star had loved her career in music, which saw her appear as a judge on The X Factor where she and Liam first met, the blonde continued that having her own children had always been her 'goal' in life.

She explained: 'Cheryl has achieved a lot in her career but becoming a mum was always her ultimate goal. She's been through a lot so I'm glad Cheryl's got her happy ending with Liam. She has always been very maternal.'

Cheryl and Liam first met when he auditioned for the ITV talent show back in 2010, when he was 16 years old.

Despite their evident happiness, their relationship has faced scrutiny in the past due to their 10-year age gap - which Sarah was quick to dismiss as unnecessary.

She continued to the magazine: 'I don't know Liam but he seems like a nice guy. I know some people were surprised by the age difference but I don't see what the fuss is about.

'There's nothing wrong with a little age gap, especially when you get to our age.'

However following the separation of Girls Aloud in 2013, Sarah went on to admit that the girls hardly see each other any more - although she was still quick to congratulate Cheryl on her news as the group are like 'sisters' to each other.

She explained: 'We’ve not seen each other properly for years but Nadine [Coyle] and I still message each other. Cheryl, Kimberley and Nicola [Roberts] are really close but Nadine and I are much more independent.

'We might have gone our separate ways but we were like sisters for years, so I’ll always care about them.'

Cheryl and Liam made the announcement they had become parents last month - by posting a sweet snap of the 23-year-old cradling the newborn to Instagram.

Clearly overwhelmed by the fact he was now a dad, Liam accompanied the sweet image with a gushing caption in light of the news.

He wrote: 'My close friends and family know there are very few times when I'm left speechless ... wow!

'I'm incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it's a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far.

Going on to pen his admiration for Cheryl, he continued: 'I'm completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this, she's really made my dreams come true.'

Meanwhile Cheryl uploaded the same snap that day, confirming the 'beautiful and healthy' tot had arrived on March 22.

Taking to social media on the national holiday, she added to her 3.2million followers: 'Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers around the world. A day that now has a different meaning to me forever.'
