Many Girls fans have still been hoping for a happy ending for Adam (Adam Driver) and Hannah (Lena Dunham), despite the odds seemingly stacked against them.

But last night's rollercoaster episode left heartbroken viewers forced to accept the inevitable - there would be no reunion between the quirky twosome.

A slew of distraught fans took to Twitter as their hopes were dashed in the space of one episode which initially promised that elusive happy ending after Adam told Jessa he needed to explore a future with his ex.

Fans were on a hopeful high as Adam informed pregnant Hannah he wanted to raise the baby together with the pair going back to her apartment to have careful sex.

It all looked promising as the former couple lived in their dream world for an afternoon, discussing getting an apartment together, with Adam even suggesting they should get married.

'There's too much history here,' says Adam. 'There's too much good stuff for us not to try.'

But in a bittersweet moment in the diner, Hannah started sobbing - aware that the whole afternoon has been a fantasy - and Adam soon realising too that there was no way back for their relationship.

'Oh Hannah and Adam. Giving me everything I wanted and then shattering those dreams,' one distraught fan tweeted.

'The moment when they both realised that their history wasn't enough to solidify their future,' wrote another. 'My heart.'

'What a beautiful and heartbreaking episode,' said a third viewer.

Other fans were pleased the characters had closure, while others tweeted they felt 'torn up' by the lack of 'happily ever after' for the twosome.

'Girls had me in tears,' tweeted one viewer. 'I love how they have done this season. #bittersweet.'

The end of the episode saw Adam return home to Jessa (Jemima Kirke), with only a handful of episodes left of the final series to decide whether they'll also implode or make it through as a couple.
