Have you been applying your make-up all wrong? Gwyneth Paltrow's make-up artist's guide to creating an everyday look will make you rethink your routine

  • Veteran make-up artist Dick Page reveals exactly how he achieved a no-make-up make-up look for Gwyneth, 44, at a recent photo shoot
  • Find out why you should be applying foundation last in your daily beauty regimen

Kicking your morning make-up routine off with foundation and then moving on to cheeks, eyes and finally lips seems like a natural progression. After all, it makes sense to start with the largest area on your face, and if we had to choose between leaving the house with a flawless complexion or a flawless cat eye, we'd choose complexion every time.

Plus, all the popular YouTube vloggers apply their face make-up first, right?

But after learning about how veteran make-up artist Dick Page glammed up Gwyneth Paltrow, 44, for a Goop photo shoot, suddenly we're questioning our entire approach.

'You get a little definition at the eye, and a little color in the lip and cheek - then you go in and see if you need anything else. Not the other way around,' Dick said in a recent post about the look he created for the shoot on goop.com

The technique, he explained, is 'the opposite of those pile-everything-on YouTube videos'.

It's less about mindlessly covering up and more about thoughtfully accentuating your best features.

The make-up artist didn't use mascara on Gwyneth at their recent shoot and it's not because her natural lashes are anything extraordinary.

'Maybe I missed the meeting, maybe the pages of my manual were stuck together...but I don’t think you always need mascara,' he said.

As an alternative, he recommends applying a dark brown or black eyeliner pencil into the base of the lashes. And if that's not enough definition for you, create a soft curl using an eyelash curler.

Just because Dick prefers a more realistic look doesn't mean he's afraid of color, though.

When moving to the cheeks, he suggests choosing vibrant red-based colors over what he calls 'mud shades' (i.e. hues one might use to contour).

'People have this fear of red, but used in a transparent way, it makes anyone look good. Use a pinkier one for paler skin, a plummier one for darker skin,' he recommended.

To make things even easier, use the same cream product on your lips. Want more of an impact? Apply a nude-toned pencil first.

It's here that Dick advises assessing how the face looks before reaching for your foundation or concealer.

If your skin just needs to be evened out, use a malleable concealer in a shade that's close to your skintone and take a light-handed approach.

'Remember that if you start to get into full erasure, though, your face ends up looking half done,' the artist said. 'You just want to get a little of the red out. It’s always less than you think it is.'

And finally, for a little extra something, try applying a dot of highlighter at the inner corners of the eyes. '[It's] a trick we do for photography all the time, but it works in real life, too,' said Dick.
