Haunting photographs show some of the women who attended the infamous Bethlem Royal Hospital where patients were 'treated' by being spun round in a chair. Most of the patients at the hospital, better known as Bedlam, were diagnosed with acute mania and some arrived after killing people. The notorious institute, which is now based in Bromley, London, was founded in 1247 during the reign of Henry III. Photographer Henry Hering took pictures of scores of Bethlem patients in order to examine their faces for evidence of their mental health conditions. Sarah Gardner (centre), a domestic servant, was admitted to Bethlem when she was 26-years-old in 1857 after she suffered from 'great mental depression'. Harriet Jordan (right) was one of the many patients who were admitted to the hospital in 1858. She was later diagnosed with acute mania.
