After a tough custody battle with ex-wife Paula Patton over their six-year-old son Julian, Robin Thicke has likely had many moments when he's needed to de-stress.

But on Tuesday, the Blurred Lines singer chose one of the most dangerous places of all to relax with a cigarette, when he was spotted puffing away at a Los Angeles petrol station.

Sporting an all-white ensemble, consisting of a short-sleeved shirt and knee-length shorts, the 40-year-old musician got his nicotine fix as he leaned against his black sport utility vehicle while filling up the petrol tank.

Shielding his eyes with a pair of oversized aviator shades, the star appeared to be far from worried about the possibility of sparking a blaze as he indulged in his habit.

While the activity is a misdemeanour in some states, having an open flame - including lit cigarettes - near a gas pump is a strict fire code in California, which requires stations to display 'No Smoking' signs.

Robin has been in a relationship with 22-year-old model April Love Geary since 2014 - the same year he split from his childhood sweetheart Paula.

It was recently reported that the exes are ‘close’ to reaching a formal custodial agreement over their son, more than two years after finalising their divorce.

TMZ reports that the 41-year-old actress has granted her ex-husband more time with their only child Julian, in a bid to ease the 'emotional strain' their protracted legal battle has had on him.

Los Angeles-based singer Robin is understood to have enjoyed lengthier bonding sessions with their son while actress Paula films new ABC series Somewhere Between on location in Vancouver, Canada.

However, sources claim the L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services is investigating the Lost Without U singer over reports of 'excessive corporal punishment' against the child – an allegation he has denied.

The former couple met when she was 15 and he was 14, and dated for 10 years before getting married in 2005. The actress filed for divorce in October 2014.

His girlfriend April is particularly popular on social media, thanks in part to her slew of scintillating selfies that she shares with her followers.
