Moviegoers are very familiar with Christian Bale's unhinged performances.

But when the Oscar winner is off-duty, he leaves the drama behind on the big screen.

The 43-year-old put on a rare show of his tender side on Tuesday in Brentwood, California, in a heartwarming game with two-year-old son Joseph.

With the youngster wrapped in his arms, Joseph took full advantage of the boost of height and amused himself by stretching the actor's mouth to produce a smile, and then pushed his head back and covered his nose.

The Fighter star beamed during the encounter and flashed a grin.

It seems he provoked the antics on their way to the car as he made funny faces that had his wife Sibi Blazic bursting with laughter.

The couple has been married since 2000 and also have 11-year-old daughter Emmeline, who was not seen on the outing.

The family breakfast at Early World Cafe was fuss-free with the family dressed in a casual style.

Christian exited with a carryout container while wearing his favorite dark green cargo pants, a look that he has favored for the past two years. He teamed the trousers with a roomy dark blue T-shirt and sneakers.

Sibi wore a padded black jacket with black leggings and sneakers, and she let her brunette tresses loose around her shoulders as she accessorized with a pair of sunglasses.

Their tot Joseph had on a baseball-style T-shirt with blue trousers and sneakers.

The quality time with family should come as a relief to Christian, who will likely be on the promotional circuit soon for some forthcoming movie releases.

His drama Song To Song featuring Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett, is due March 17. It tells the story of two intersecting love triangles.

In the period film Hostiles, he stars as an Army captain who escorts a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory in 1892. The movie, opposite Rosamund Pike and Ben Foster, is slated for a release later this year.
