Sabotaged by his own song? Ed Sheeran close to breaking record for longest number one Australian single for Shape Of You ... But could be brought undone by HIMSELF

He's the flame-haired crooner dominating music charts the world over.

And while Ed Sheeran looks poised to break the current record for longest running Australia number one with his single Shape Of You he could be sabotaged by none other than himself.

Ed's next single Galway Girl is proving the musician's biggest competition for breaking the record, currently held by Abba's Waterloo, which spent 14 weeks at number one in 1976.

Shape Of You has been number one on the ARIA charts for 12 weeks running since its release in January.

But if indications from other charts are any sign, the single will soon be knocked off the top spot by Ed's newest single, Galway Girl.

The Brit's cheeky take on the karaoke classic became number one on the iTunes single chart this week, knocking Shape Of You down from the top spot.

Ed's latest success Down Under comes as five of his songs from Divide made up the ARIA chart's top 10 in March, a accolade last held by The Beatles in 1964.

As well as taking up half of the top 10, the 26-year-old's album had all 16 of its tracks sitting in the Australian top 40 with online streaming reportedly responsible for the success.

Over in the down-to-earth singer's native UK, his success has been even more monumental, with all 16 tracks squeezing into the top 20 - a feat not even the legendary 'fabulous four' have managed.

Further elevating the enormity of Ed's accomplishment is the fact that unlike The Beatles, most of the tracks weren't even commercially released as singles.

The advent of streaming sites like Spotify have marked the biggest change to the decades old 'singles chart' format since the iTunes music store was released 16 years ago.

Previously, the chart only accommodated the sales of tracks chosen by the record label to be the most commercially viable, but was altered to include data from on-demand charts in 2014.
