'I was defending a fellow coach': Seal explains THAT 2013 Twitter rant following Joel Madden's drug bust that saw the former Voice star kicked out of his Sydney hotel

He famously blasted Australia's 'trash media' in an explosive Twitter rant after his fellow Voice coach was kicked out of his hotel for alleged marijuana possession.

And singer Seal has explained his actions on Thursday, telling WSFM101.7's Jonesy & Amanda: 'I was defending a fellow coach,' while referring to Joel Madden.

The 54-year-old's comment comes nearly four years after he unleashed on social media, slamming The Star for booting the Good Charlotte frontman from his room amid the scandal.

In June 2013, the Grammy-winning artist took to Twitter to blast media and The Star's Darling hotel for their treatment of his co-star.

'Way to respect a guest in your country trash media, way to make us feel welcome,' Seal Tweeted.

'Shame on the Star...you ask him to meet n greet a cancer victim in your hotel then send police to his room?? Nice... very classy... keep it up Judas. I'm done here,' he added.

Earlier that week, Joel, 38, was told to pack his bags and vacate the hotel after cleaning staff allegedly found a small amount of marijuana in his room.

Although police were called, they declined to press charges against the tattooed rocker.

The father-of-two later released a statement on his Tumblr, apologising to fans.

'Sunday while I was at work, a hotel employee found a small amount of marijuana in my hotel room,' he wrote at the time.

'The police were called and responded. Sydney is my adopted home and I appreciate the way the NSW police handled the situation. They have informed me there will be no charges.

'I hope this didn't cause too much drama for anyone.'

Seal also later apologised for any misunderstanding over his tirade, Tweeting: 'It's been almost 11 weeks away from my kids and me saying 'I can't wait to go home' was me missing being home with them.'

The ex-husband of Heidi Klum is set to revive his coaching role on this year's season of the Channel Nine singing competition.

He joins longstanding coach Delta Goodrem, as well as new-comers Boy George and Kelly Rowland.
