What do YOU think this says? Next greetings card has Reddit users in a Reich tizz

  • What do you think the card really says?

An online dispute erupted over a greeting card which could be read to proclaim that ‘Hitler is my favourite colour.’

Social media site Reddit exploded in colourful comments and divisive opinions about whether the card from retailer Next should be read as ‘Hitler is my favourite colour’ or 'Glitter is my favourite colour.'

The pink card is boldly emblazoned with large, glitter-covered lettering which looks distinctly like the name of the deceased German mass murderer and Nazi party leader - but it also looks suspiciously like the word 'Glitter'.

Dozens of people quickly joined the thread with varying opinions as to whether the card was really meant to say that Hitler was indeed its favourite colour.

This greetings card sparked an online tussle as some claimed the card stated 'Hitler' rather than  'Glitter is my favourite colour'

'Maybe it doesn't look as much like 'Hitler' as it could, but it looks more like Hitler than anything else I've seen that isn't trying to be Hitler,' one user said.

But some Reddit users defended the card.

'Nothing important--unsolicited and flippant grammar snobbery,' one Reddit user said.

'Meh, it's pretty obvious in context imo,' another comment read.

'Agreed. You don't see "Hitler" written in glitter very often,' another Reddit user said.

Many users agreed that glitter was not a colour so the card was a misrepresentation in this regard at least.

However the consensus was broken when racial slurs and politics intensified the online fray.

But the debate then turned farcical and fun again when people jokingly shared their 'favourite colours' that are not really colours at all.

'6 is my favourite colour of the alphabet.'

'Sequins are my favorite color,' another user replied.

'Glitter did nothing wrong,' said another.

A spokesperson for Next said that the card most definitely said 'glitter' - not Hitler.

‘The card most definitely says 'glitter is my favourite colour' and we're very sorry if the decorative font used distorts this in any way,’ the Next spokesperson confirmed.

When good signs go bad

This latest controversy is an clear example of an epic message miscommunication on a greetings card.

However inappropriate messages are nothing new in the world of signs, where an innocent misspelling can create a very inappropriate message.
