'The continuity is ridiculously bad!' EastEnders fans go wild over blunder as they see Michelle Fowler's hair grow inches in a matter of minutes during Grand National scene

Given that EastEnders' filming schedule takes place several weeks before broadcast, the opportunity to entwine the script with the news of the day is often not possible.

However, when bosses of the BBC One soap attempted to weave the winning result of Saturday's Grand National into Monday's episode, a glaring continuity blunder left the them open to merciless mockery at the hands of eagle-eyed viewers.

Fans watched as Michelle Fowler, played by newcomer Jenna Russell, sported suddenly longer hair as she chatted with Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) on a bench in fictional Walford's Albert Square.

Within seconds of the scene being aired, fans took to Twitter in droves to point out the sudden switch in hairstyles, with one writing: 'The continuity re Michelle's hair is ridiculously bad.'

Another stated: 'Did EastEnders really think we wouldn't notice Michelle's hair miraculously grow and then go back to being short?'

Tweeted a third viewer: 'Not very consistent, Michelle's hair is different, the sun is also shining in one and not the other!'

However, one fan did commend bosses of the show for their efforts - but was still aware of the error - as he wrote: 'Nice little topical scene there. Pity Michelle's hair has grown about 2 inches since the scenes around it but good try.'

The scene, presumably shot on Sunday, was hastily added after Saturday's Grand National saw One For Arthur trot to the finish line as the annual race's victor.

As such, bosses of the show couldn't resist the opportunity to tweak the script so that Michelle could mention her late father Arthur Fowler.

Her younger brother, Martin, scooped £200 as he won a sweepstake after backing the prized thoroughbred in honour of their late father.

Patrick was subsequently seen asking for the lucky Fowler as he said: 'Michelle – you haven’t seen Martin, have you? He’s not on the stall today.

After Michelle responded that she'd heard her brother wasn't feeling well, Patrick added: 'Well, this should get him back on his feet. One For Arthur, eh? He said the name would bring him luck. And he didn't even check the odds.'

Moments after she spoke to Patrick with her newly-lengthened tresses, Michelle then had a chat with her best pal Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean) on the same bench - but her hair had returned to its original length.
