Premier League has never seen so many away wins with Leicester and Tottenham topping the table... the weekend's fixtures saw rate on the road climb to 33%

Playing away from home has never been so inviting in the history of the Premier League with the record percentage for wins on the road on course to be broken this season.

Liverpool won 6-0 at Aston Villa on Sunday while Tottenham managed a 2-1 win at Manchester City as this most unpredictable season continues to unfold.

Saturday also saw Stoke, Watford, West Brom and Southampton – four out of seven fixtures that day – sent home happy, bringing this season’s win rate on the road to 33.08 per cent.

Never before has a season seen a higher percentage, with 86 of the 260 games played in 2015-16 having ended in the travelling team’s favour.

The record currently stands at 32.37 per cent and was set in 2013-14 – the year when Liverpool went agonisingly close to their first Premier League title.

The lowest was 23.68 per cent in 2010-11 and only four more away wins are needed this year to beat that term’s total.

This topsy-turvy season has seen Leicester not only join the race for the Premier League title but lead it, having been 5000/1 with bookmakers to become champions in August.

Leicester have been the most successful on the road this season after winning eight. That could have become nine on Sunday but they were given a mountain to climb at Arsenal when they had Danny Simpson sent off, which saw their 1-0 lead become a 2-1 loss at the Emirates.

Yet Claudio Ranieri’s side have made a mockery of home advantage this season, having won at grounds including the Etihad, White Hart Lane, St James’ Park and Goodison Park.

Tottenham follow close behind Leicester with seven wins, having not been beaten away since the opening day of the season to Manchester United. Arsenal likewise have won seven.

It is no wonder those three top the table, then, while others lag behind.

Take Manchester City, for example. No team has won more at home than them this season (9) but they have won as many away as Crystal Palace (5), who sit 13th and are not safe from relegation.

Away win percentage around Europe

Premier League – 86/260 (33.1%)

Ligue 1 – 77/260 (29.6%)

Bundesliga – 65/189 (34.4%)

Serie A – 75/250 (30%)

La Liga – 61/239 (25.5%)

Even Liverpool have won one more than City on the road and it is that which sees Manuel Pellegrini's side sit fourth – six points off Leicester and four behind the two clubs from north London.

Despite the Premier League looking likely to set a new record, it is still not the most in Europe.

Our 33.1 per cent beats France (29.6 per cent), Italy (30 per cent) and Spain (25.5 per cent) but is being overshadowed by the Germans, whose away win percentage is 34.4 per cent.

That statistic in the Bundesliga is helped by Bayern Munich who, having played 11 games away from the Allianz Arena, have won eight.

It is not set in stone that the record will be broken in the Premier League yet, given some sides aren’t doing the statistic any favours.

Aston Villa, for example, have won just once away all season – at Bournemouth in August – as they head for relegation to the Championship.

But this unpredictable season has surprised us in so many ways and it is highlighted further by the fact that home advantage doesn't do much good this year.
