Product Description

Serevent is a bronchodilator and is available as the brand formulation of Salmeterol. It is a long-acting beta2 adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA). The inhaler has a protein binding of 96% and has a biological half-life of five hours. The time taken for the drug to lose half of its physiologic, pharmacologic or radiologic activity is termed as biological half-life.

Medical Uses

Asthma and exercise-induced bronchospasm are the conditions that are treated with the help of Serevent. It is also used in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including chronic bronchitis as well as emphysema. This medicine works by relaxing muscles in the airways and thus improves the breathing.

How to use Serevent?

Read the Medication guide properly before commencing the treatment. It is inhaled by mouth, usually 4 times in a day, twice in the morning and twice in the evening or as prescribed by the doctor. Do not exhale in to the device or wash the mouth piece. Never use the spacer with this inhaler. Hold the device in one hand with the mouth piece facing towards you. Click only once and inhale through the mouth. Hold on the breadth for few seconds. Take the device away from the mouth and exhale slowly. Do not use it again even when the patient did not feel or taste the medication. This is normal and using it again would lead to a drug overdose.

If the patient is using Serevent to prevent bronchospasm, it should be inhaled 30 minutes before starting any exercise. Controller drugs are used every day and quick-relief drugs are used if the breathing worsens suddenly. Do not use this for a long term if you have thyroid problems, heart disease, high blood pressure . If the medication stops working on the patient, if the inhaler has to be used more than the prescribed dose or if the condition of asthma worsens, seek medical advice as soon as possible. There are a few symptoms of drug overdose. Shakiness in legs or arms, abnormal heart rate, sleeplessness, seizures, confusion, jaw or arm pain, difficulty in moving, sour stomach, skin rash and indigestion are a few among them.

Serevent should be used only when other long term asthma control medicines are not effective on the patient.
