It was certainly a combustible formula.

For fearless Joaquin Phoenix was spotted filling up his car at a gas station while showing off his uncovered flame-hair in Los Angeles on Thursday.

He looked rather akin to his cringeworthy character in Her, who fell in love with his computer operating system, due to his dyed locks as he pumped petrol into tank.

The 42-year-old was looking his usual jolly self in a trendy ensemble of black T-shirt, jeans and trainers, as he partook in what was surely one of the more exciting moments of his day.

Thankfully there was no Phoenix from the flames moment, and the Walk The Line star was soon heading on his way, after a brief interlude to let his pet pooch stretch his legs.

It remains to be seen what his rumoured lover Rooney Mara will make of the eccentric stars new look.

It had been reported that Rooney and Joaquin fell for one another while filming the biblical epic Mary Magdalene.

Rooney is featured as the titular character in the upcoming film, while Joaquin plays the role of Jesus.

The much-anticipated new movie was shot in Italy and during filming breaks, Joaquin and Rooney were spotted hanging out together, including one time when they were seen smoking on the balcony of their hotel room

The two movie stars previously worked together on the Spike Jonze-directed Her.

In 2018, Mara will work with Joaquin again in Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot directed by Gus Van Sant.
