She's the redhead comedian known for her bold, controversial humour and ability to make fun of herself. 

Yet Kathy Griffin, 56, was entertaining her fanbase in other ways on Thursday as she tweeted a topless picture in a bid to keep up with the 'kidz'.

Keeping up with the likes of selfie-obsessed Kim Kardashian and Emily Ratajkowski, the star explained the racy picture by saying: 'I c the kidz doin these kinda pics,so...' (sic)

Cathy followed up the joke with a stream of hashtags: '#red #hair #pale #a** #jeans #louboutins #boobs #standupcomedy #fierce #fire #dope #workout #fitness'.

In the funny picture, the star wears just black trousers and towering heels as she stands beside a pool surrounded by green fields.

She covers her breasts with her hands and gazes skyward, as though meditating upon the blue sky. 

The 56-year-old star's figure looks impossibly trim with the topless snap revealing her washboard stomach and shapely legs.

Her auburn locks gleam in the sunshine as the straight tresses slip down the comedian's alabaster shoulders. 

Kathy's Twitter followers were quick to rave about the star's incredible age-defying body. 

One user replied: 'I think you're extraordinarily beautiful. With that on top of being funny.'  

Another gushed: 'You look amazing. I'm your age and jealous. Time to hit the gym.' 

Kathy has had a complicated relationship with her body, confessing in her 2009 autobiography, Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, that she got carried away with the pressures of Hollywood.

The comedian would take back-to-back step aerobics classes and fell into a cycle of starving herself for days and then binge eating. 

She also turned to diet pills and liposuction, even using illegal drugs to lose weight.

'I am proud of my two weeks on speed,' she joked. 'It was full-on illegal speed. I took it to lose weight which is not very smart.

'I just felt three times as hungry afterward.'

The funny woman healed her relationship with her body and now relies on a healthy diet and plenty of exercise to keep in shape. 

She is also happily loved up with marketing executive Randy Bick who at 38 is 18 years her junior. 

'We've been together five years now and we have a great time,' the star told People Magazine. 

'He's like a regular guy, you know, he's like a real guy. He's not like a Hollywood guy.'
