Let Me Fly (BMG)

With eight previous albums and three decades of touring behind them, Mike + The Mechanics have become more than a hobby project for Genesis stalwart Mike Rutherford. This polished affair, with Rutherford on guitar and bass, moves with the times by adding a choir and R&B; loops. The Mechanics also benefit from having two lead vocalists: Canadian Tim Howar contributes the radio-friendly rock; Londoner Andrew Roachford supplies soul power.

Hopeless Romantic (Verve)

A callow Madonna protegee when she made her name in the Noughties, Branch cuts a more mature figure on her first solo album in 14 years. The fresh start eschews punky guitars for hazy synths and is underpinned by songs addressing a divorce and her new relationship with Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney. The latter produces with an engaging, lo-fi spirit, stressing Branchs pop leanings on Fault Line and echoing Lana Del Rey on the moody title track.

Silver Eye (Mute)

Goldfrapps first album in four years leans heavily on the same pulsating electronics that powered 2005s Supernature, with the mid-tempo synths of Systemagic and Anymore setting a beats-driven tone. There is variety, too. Silver Eyes more dreamlike, atmospheric pieces recall the pastoral folk of 2008s Seventh Tree, although the duo are prone to silliness including a song about a man who sprouts fur and changes into a tiger.

Automaton (Virgin EMI)

Seven years since his last album and the Space Cowboys appetite for sci-fi funk and disco is undiminished. Jay Kay has added Daft Punk robotics to the mix, but otherwise sticks to the retro rhythms that have served him so well. Its hard not to be swayed by the smooth, Latin soul of Summer Girl despite a line that rhymes Limoncello with special fellow.

Careless People (Polydor)

Blackburns Charlotte OConnor strikes a balance between confessional fare and dusky dance beats on her second album. With her towering voice pitched between Emeli Sandé and Lana Del Rey, opening track Blackout is a sultry statement of intent and she reveals a strong romantic streak on Medicine Man.

NELLY FURTADO

The Ride (Nelstar)

Nelly studied sewing, ceramics and drama and worked in a record shop before writing The Ride. The change has done her good. She voices her distaste for fame on Carnival Games, but her poppy instincts are intact on Sticks And Stones and the electro ballad Tap Dancing. Producer John Congletons punky poise and heavy beats lend her songs an edge that was once missing.
