Sainsbury’s relied on Argos to prop up a slide in sales as the first signs of price rises appeared on supermarket shelves. Sales in the retailer jumped 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter, but this was led by shoppers flocking to Argos to pick up goods such as Nintendo game consoles. And it said rising commodity prices and the fall in the pound since Brexit had turned the tide on falling food prices, introducing inflation for the first time in almost three years.
