In the pink: Millie Mackintosh, 27, is the girl of the moment
Many have made a lucrative living from boasting on social media — but one person has transformed it into a veritable art form. Step forward Millie Mackintosh, former Made In Chelsea star and descendant of the famous Quality Street chocolate makers.
So seemingly privileged is her lifestyle, so perfect her figure, so extensive her air miles, that you would have to be a saint not to feel a touch of the green-eyed monster at the sight of her holiday snaps.
Indeed, Millie, 27, has more holidays in a year than some people do in a lifetime.
She’s away from home on average once every three weeks — last year, she had a whopping 18 trips in all, each documented on her account on photo-sharing website Instagram, and lapped up by her 1.3 million followers.
But don’t call her a gilded Millie. For when she’s not downplaying her family’s fortunes, she’s hard at work plugging her vast range of products via an unremitting grind of parties or while tirelessly frolicking on pristine, white, sandy beaches.
And don’t forget the relentless exercise routine to keep that trim body in tip-top shape. But despite the endless plugging of products, there’s no doubt Millie’s most valuable commodity is herself.
Put simply, every picture — from a close-up of her flawless complexion after a luxury facial to one of her many peachy ‘belfies’ (that’s ‘bottom selfies’, or pictures of her bottom, to you and me) — is taken with one thing in mind: to make her life seem like the most fabulous one imaginable.
ALISON BOSHOFF reveals the secrets of thoroughly marketed Millie’s success — in her own words . . .
WHO ARE YOU CALLING HEIRESS?
Millie made her name in the Channel 4 reality television show Made In Chelsea as one of their resident posh girls. And, indeed, the producers played up Millie’s upper-class credentials, calling her an heiress.
It’s certainly true that she comes from a famous family.
Her great-great-grandfather, John, was a Victorian entrepreneur who created Mackintosh’s sweet company and was known as the Toffee King.
A generation on, her great-grandfather and his brother invented Quality Street.
Unfortunately for Millie, though, the family connection to the sweetie business is long past.
‘People severely overestimate how wealthy I am,’ she has said. ‘I’m routinely referred to as the heir to the Quality Street fortune, as though I hit 21 and inherited millions. If only . . .
‘It’s not as if I get a cut every time someone eats a toffee. My family sold the business years ago. I’m comfortable, but I don’t live a flash life.’
Millie, whose full name is Camilla, was raised in a £1.4million townhouse in Bath by her parents Nigel and Georgina, who ran a delicatessen in nearby Marlborough.
She and her younger sister, Alice, were horse-mad and there was enough money to indulge that hobby and send them to private boarding schools — Hanford Prep in Dorset, followed by Millfield in Somerset, where senior school fees stand at nearly £12,000 a term. But don’t go calling her posh.
‘Sometimes when I hear my voice on a recording I think, “Oh God, I sound really posh,”’ she admits. ‘But I don’t generally feel like I am.’

WORKING OUT IS A FULL-TIME JOB
All those clothes that need promoting require a toned clothes hanger on which to model them — and, to this end, Millie spends almost as much time exercising as she does holidaying.
‘I suppose I do work out a lot,’ she has said. ‘I have two trainers and also go to a range of different classes such as spinning [indoor cycling] and hot yoga. Then there is the weight training.’
This activity, too, has led to business opportunities — she released Made: A Book Of Style, Food And Fitness in 2014, despite critics claiming it was so short on facts it could only possibly interest a teenager who didn’t read books.
Millie’s thrice-weekly training sessions take place like clockwork with personal trainer Mark Garlick at the Lomax gym in Chelsea. She also trains once a week with Russell Bateman at the Skinny B*tch Collective, and she then takes either a Pilates class at Paula’s Body Barre, or a spinning class at Psycle, both in London.
The result is a lean size-6 figure, which attracts endless compliments from her adoring fans.
And, as she confesses, a strict diet is essential to keep her most marketable asset — herself — in peak condition.
When describing her eating habits last year, she said: ‘The main focus was to eat the right foods at the right times around my training and to make sure the portion control was exact.’
And so she keeps a gimlet eye on her consumption, eating ‘lots of greens, especially asparagus as it helps flush out excess water, lean protein at every meal — eggs, fish, chicken, turkey or steak’.
Permitted carbs are the following: ‘Oats, quinoa, sweet potato or rice. Fats were goat’s cheese, avocado, pesto, cottage cheese and nuts.’ Even fruit is banned — gosh, all that sugar! — apart from lemons, blueberries and raspberries.
LIFE REALLY IS A BEACH
So far this year, Millie has been to Cape Town in South Africa, Dubai, Paris (twice) and Los Angeles. At six holidays in only three months, that's not bad going
So far this year, Millie has been to Cape Town in South Africa, Dubai, Paris (twice), and Los Angeles. Oh, and she’s also had a mini break at the exclusive Babington House in Somerset. At six holidays in only three months, that’s not bad going.
Indeed, at this rate, she’s probably going to exceed the holidays she took last year — when she managed 18 trips in 12 months.
Millie’s destinations of choice included the Maldives, Florence, Sydney, Portugal, Dubai, Verona, the Coachella Festival in California, Ibiza, Antibes, Berlin and many, many more.

These trips seem to serve two purposes. First, to advertise the hotels Millie is holidaying in — from the luxury Burj Khalifa in Dubai to the Shangri La resort in Mauritius — and which have presumably gifted her the holiday in return for a glowing review.
And, second, to provide a picture-perfect backdrop against which to pose, sometimes wearing her own clothing designs (which she will helpfully point out are now on sale) and often in swimwear that shows off her pert bottom.
These so-called ‘belfies’ receive a lot of online traffic — one bikini picture of her posted last week has nearly 23,000 likes. ‘Sun, sea and a giant sail — the perfect backdrop for a little beach photo shoot in my @bahimibeachwear bikini,’ she wrote. Another, against the backdrop of Dubai Marina, received more than 55,000 likes. And in today’s online-driven market, ‘likes’ equals lucrative.
WHY SHE WANTS TO DRESS KATE...
She makes much of her fashion range in her endless flattering photos of herself, but her training as a designer is, perhaps, as slim as Millie herself.
After studying for a vocational BTEC qualification in Art and Design while at Millfield School, she did an internship with a lingerie designer and then made babydoll dresses for friends.
She would sell them as one-offs, sewing in her school nametape as a label.

Millie then took an eight-week make-up course and was working part-time for cosmetics company Mac when the producers from Made In Chelsea came along.
Buoyed by her media profile, she has had her own range of clothes since 2014, which is currently sold by online retailer ASOS and via her own website.
What started as a capsule line featuring faux leather shorts is now a long way from the cheap and cheerful offerings of the rival ranges offered by The Only Way Is Essex crowd.
For example, a simple printed wrap mini-dress is £85 and there are lots of tailored separates. Millie clearly is aspiring to be a cut above the rest. Indeed, she told an interviewer that the Duchess of Cambridge could benefit from wearing her designs: ‘She’d look great in one of my little wrap dresses as she has such a gorgeous body and I think it would look fun — less middle-aged — and sexier without being too revealing.’
In another interview, she said: ‘I want to be seen and taken seriously as a businesswoman’, and it was noted that she referred to her ‘brand’ on average of once every four minutes during the hour-long interview.
Hunky Hugo... just don't mention the ex
A virtually constant presence is Millie's boyfriend, Hugo Taylor
A virtually constant presence is Millie’s boyfriend Hugo Taylor, whose great claim to fame is he once dated Princess Eugenie.
He is part of an uber-posh party crowd, which includes model sisters Cara and Poppy Delevingne, and Prince Harry’s ex Chelsy Davy.
Hugo and Millie (left) were an item during their Made In Chelsea days, but split in 2011 in explosive circumstances. During a party, Millie raised her glass and proposed a toast.
‘To my best friend Rosie Fortescue, for hooking up with Hugo Taylor while we were together. Here’s to friendship,’ before promptly storming out. In another memorable moment, she threw a dirty martini in Hugo’s face.
After such heartbreak at the hands of a posh boy, perhaps it’s no wonder that Millie turned to a lover who was completely different. In 2012, she started dating Professor Green, the rapper whose nickname was derived from his early life dealing cannabis.
Real name Stephen Manderson, he was raised on a council estate in Hackney — about as far from Sloane Ranger as it’s possible to be.
They married in a lavish ceremony in Somerset in 2013, but, alas, their love was not to last. They divorced last year amid much acrimony. Millie later re-used her delicate lace wedding dress as a blood-spattered Halloween costume.
Just a few months after the split, Millie reunited with Hugo and they have since moved in together. Darkly handsome, Hugo is also a reality TV creation, having appeared on I’m A Celebrity... and Come Dine With Me. Judging by the sheer quantity of pictures of the couple smooching, Millie is smitten.
... AND SHE'S PALS WITH MEGHAN
Naturally, Millie has an enviable social circle, and often posts pictures of herself enjoying lunches or nights out with her gorgeous, skinny, rich friends.
These include Prince Harry’s girlfriend Meghan Markle, with whom she enjoyed a cycle ride in Oxfordshire last year.
Millie is also chums with One Direction’s Harry Styles, and Rosie Fortescue — the cause of Millie’s break-up with Hugo Taylor, has been re-admitted to the fold.

Other pals include DJ and model Zara Martin, Juliet Angus, a Chicago-born businesswoman who appears in the Ladies Of London reality TV show, and model Alicia Rountree, who dated Jude Law.
They’re a very photogenic bunch. Not that Millie has always been the most popular girl in class.
‘I had acne and braces. I was shy,’ she said of her teenage self. ‘It took a while to figure myself out.’
Fingers in lots of pies
Millie was a pioneer of the Insta-famous lifestyle, picking up many endorsements. In 2014, according to marketing firm Celebrity Intelligence, she plugged 13 brands, from St Tropez fake tan to Pimm’s, Dorothy Perkins, Diet Coke and Sure deodorant.
Then, she was managed by Claire Powell at CAN Associates, who famously ‘made’ Katie Price and Peter Andre, but she’s since moved to Donna Management. Recent endorsements include J20 soft drinks and her own line of fake eyelashes.

On Instagram, Millie is plug-happy, handing out dozens of endorsements, presumably in return for freebies.
Among many examples, she posted a picture of her legs with the caption: ‘Glitz and glamour in my @Calzedonia tights.’ Another plug accompanied a picture of a table groaning with bespoke Christmas crackers: ‘Festive breakfast of dreams! Thank you @jomalonelondon.’
