- The show creator unveiled the name of the character in an interview last week
- Was always planning on killing off bomb defuser Dylan Young in 'As we know it'
- The 2006 episode featured a man with a bomb ready to explode in his torso
- Followed Meredith Grey and the bomb squad as they tried to remove it
- Young retrieves the explosive and is killed when it goes off - but Chandler was so talented Rhimes was reluctant to follow her own script
Many characters have perished between the walls of Grey's Anatomy's Seattle Grace Hospital - but one of them gave creator Shonda Rhimes second thoughts about her own script.
The producer and screenwriter revealed the name of the character in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last week, going back more than 10 years in the show's history.
Rhimes' second thoughts center around a bomb defuser named Dylan Young, played in 2006 by Kyle Chandler in 'As we know it', an Emmy-nominated episode of the second season that features a man with an active bomb stuck in his chest.
Ill-fated: Shonda Rhimes revealed in an interview last week she had second thoughts about killing off Bomb defuser Dylan Young (right) on Grey's Anatomy
The episode follows the medical team's efforts to save the man while putting their own lives in danger, knowing that the explosive could go off at any moment.
Meredith Grey, in particular, spends excruciating hours with her hand on the bomb and inside the man's chest, making sure the rocket doesn't explode.
Eventually, the explosive is taken out of the patient and Young, a bomb squad employee, takes it in his hand. Knowing that the slightest shock can trigger a blast, he begins to walk away with the rocket - which tragically goes off, killing him instantly.
The bomb defuser's tragic fate was always part of the plan, but Chandler's talent made it harder on the show runner to stick to the script - and the actor himself tried to salvage Young.
'He would pitch me ideas on how Dylan, his character, could maybe not explode, and I would show him the line in the script that said, "Dylan explodes." That's literally all it said. He was written to explode,' Rhimes said.
Determined: Kyle Chandler (right), who played the doomed character, tried to get Rhimes (left) to give Young a happier ending, but the show runner managed to stick to the script
Compliments: Ellen Pompeo (pictured with the rest of the cast in 2005) said she remembers Chandler being 'amazing' and she wasn't surprised his career took off after the episode
'But I did not expect to have Kyle Chandler. I didn't want to explode him.'
Chandler's performance on the episode received praise, and the actor was nominated for an Emmy as a result.
Shortly afterwards, he gained fame in Friday Night Lights as football coach Eric Taylor.
'I remember thinking Kyle Chandler was amazing. I wasn't surprised his career really took off after that because he was so natural,' Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr Grey, said.
Episode director Peter Horton still remembers the tension-filled episode as one for the ages.
'It was the highlight of Grey's Anatomy in all of its 12 years,' he said. 'It was a special moment when it all came together in just the right way.'
