Boy, 8, dies after a flower box falls on his head as he was climbing up the side of his house

  • Kevin Reilly, 8, was pronounced dead at a Brooklyn, New York, hospital Thursday

  • He grabbed onto a planter box which then fell onto his head
  • He was found unconscious and unresponsivle with head trauma 

An eight-year-old boy has died after a flower box fell onto his head while he was climbing up the side of his home in Brooklyn.

Police say Kevin Reilly was found unconscious and unresponsive with head trauma outside his two-story home in the New York City borough just before 5:30 pm on Thursday.

Authorities say the boy was climbing up a ground floor, gated window when he grabbed a six-foot long planter above the window, causing it to fall onto his head.

A neighbor said that first responders rushed to the scene quickly after getting word that the boy was hurt.

He was taken to Coney Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

'It was a freak accident,' a neighbor, Tom O'Malley, told the New York Post on Thursday night.

O'Malley said that first responders rushed to the scene quickly after getting word that Reilly was hurt. 

'They were screaming down there. Everyone came racing down: police, fire department, one after another they were flying down my block.'
