On her first trip to Germany as an official adviser to President Trump, Ivanka Trump certainly made a style statement.

The first daughter wore a pair of oversized mismatched Marni earrings to a gala dinner at Deutsche Bank in Berlin on Tuesday.

Ivanka is right on trend, as asymmetrical ear ornaments decorated the lobes of countless models on multiple spring 2017 catwalks, including Erdem, Sportmax and J.W. Anderson.

From long, dangly mismatched sets seen at Marni to completely different earrings worn on each lobe at Sportmax and J.W. Anderson, the asymmetrical look is hotter than ever.

To get the look without spending on a new pair, team individual earrings that you already own that share similar colors, complementary shapes or related themes. Playing with different lengths adds edge and interest.

'I like to try to stay within the same color palette or metals, to keep it easy and feel symmetrical,' says jewelry designer Sarah Magid. 'Overall the look should appear cohesive and not like you accidentally put on two totally different pieces.'

When pairing contrasting silhouettes, 'a geometric shaped stud (like a lightning bolt or triangle) goes great with edgy statement earrings, and a very traditional circle or hoop complements a more classic, vintage inspired piece,' says Sarah.

'My favorite way to rock this trend is by wearing a large, sculptural, bright earring in one ear and a small gold or silver stud in the other. The juxtaposition makes an impact and updates this trend that I remember so fondly from the late 80’s'.'

For the perfect pair, designers like Marni are taking the guesswork out of mixing and matching, and are offering coordinated asymmetrical sets that match but don't really match. Shop our stylish edit below.
