Karen Gillan insists both she and her Jumanji character Ruby share fans' annoyance at her sexy jungle get up 'but it's for a reason'
Fans were annoyed by Karen Gillan’s skimpy outfit when the promotional photo for the upcoming Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle movie was released.
But it seems her character, Ruby, is with you...and Karen understands why it upset some people.
The 29-year-old shared her response to the backlash over her 'super sexualized' Jumanji costume when she stopped by People Now to talk about Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 on Tuesday, the eve of its Los Angeles premiere.
Skimpy costume: Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle actress Karen Gillan said she understands why fans got annoyed about her film outfit in an interview released on Tuesday
'I was a little surprised just because it was quite extreme, but I understand gender equality is very much at the forefront,' the red-head admitted.
'It’s a very big topic of discussion, which is great, then along comes a picture that kind of encapsulates that visually a little bit.
'My character is having the same reaction as everybody else in the movie,' the actress explained. 'She’s like, "Why am I wearing this? This is not fair!" '
With her game crew: The 29-year-old co-stars with Kevin Hart, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Jack Black who are all more suitably dressed for jungle terrain than she is
She continued: 'It really is [intentional]. It highlights the issue more than anything.'
Back in September, shortly after the first still from the film hit the web, Karen took to social media to address fan concerns about the female character’s attire, with the star assuring her followers that her 'child sized' clothes will 'pay off' in the end.
Jumanji; Welcome To The Jungle is a spin-off from the popular 1995 film centered on a board game and starring Robin Williams.
Dress code: 'My character [Ruby] is having the same reaction as everybody else in the movie,' the actress told People Now. 'She’s like, "Why am I wearing this? This is not fair!" '
All's good: But the former Doctor Who star assured her fans 'It really is [intentional],' adding it 'highlights the issue' of gender equality 'more than anything'
This time around four teens discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game's jungle setting, controlling 'avatar' characters who come to life.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black also star along with Karen, who rocketed to fame after co-starring as the young assistant of Doctor Who in 2010.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is scheduled to open in theaters December 22.
Monochrome magic: On Thursday Karen dropped into the Sirius XM Studios in New York
