Judy Garland and James Mason appeared in another version in 1954, while the most recent movie, released in 1976, saw Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the lead roles.

Cooper's interpretation - based on a script by Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth - is set to give a new look at the story of a singer who sees her fame rise as quickly as her troubled lover-and-mentor's star falls.
