American rapper Childish Gambino will headline this year's Falls Festival... after he was booed off stage at an Australian pub last year

He was booed off stage the last time he performed in Australia.

But on Friday, Childish Gambino - aka actor Donald Glover, who plays Troy in TV show Community - was announced as the headline act at Falls Festival.

The news comes almost a year after the Californian rapper was heckled during a pub concert in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Fans at the sold-out show were disappointed after Gambino spent the first 40 minutes of his set behind turntables at The Cambridge Hotel.

The 32-year-old was also joined onstage by a large entourage who attempted to joke with an increasingly frustrated crowd.

He eventually took to the mic, but unimpressed attendees heckled and chanted obscenities during a falsetto performance before he left the stage.

The rapper was said to be stunned by the hostile reception, which also involved fans scrawling abuse in perspiration on the venue's glass windows.

Attendees reportedly charged the stage in the vain hope that he would return to finish his set, before leaving when it became clear it was over.

Others called for refunds on their tickets following the disappointing performance, a portion of which was featured on The Cambridge Hotel's official Facebook page.

'To everyone who came to see Childish Gambino show last night we are as disappointed as all of you,' the venue later announced in an official statement.

'We aim to bring the best possible acts to Newcastle for music lovers. As seen last night, unfortunately we have no control over the act's performance once onstage.

They concluded: 'He didn’t deliver on what was billed and expected by everyone, including us.'
