'James Bond is part of the fabric of our society': Orlando Bloom reveals he'd love the chance to take over from Daniel Craig as 'very English' 007

He's known for his chiselled good looks and suave charm.

And Orlando Bloom has just thrown his hat into the ring as a contender for the role of James Bond in the next 007 film, potentially providing some serious competition for current favourites Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston.

The 40-year-old actor told BBC News that he was a huge fan of the franchise, saying: 'I grew up loving those [Bond] films. Who didn't?'

'I'm sure they'll probably do more with Daniel, and who knows where they'll go with that?'

Orlando has even put some thought into how he would play the charming spy, channeling the 'wink and twinkle' behind the eye like Jack Sparrow, Sean Connery and Roger Moore.'

The Pirates of the Caribbean star mused: 'A bit of that very English, but that sort of twinkle with the muscular dynamic.

'But who knows, they could do a woman. The world we live in today... who knows where they’ll go with it. But I do love that world.'

Orlando's bid for the big role could be too little too late, however, after it was hinted Idris was in line for the role.

It appears fans might be seeing Idris, 44, in the starring role since his Guerrilla director John Ridley, 51, let sip that he 'can't wait' to see him on the silver screen commanding the iconic role.

Speaking to BBC Radio One at the premiere of their new Sky Atlantic series, the Oscar winning writer couldn't help but gush about the Luther star's talent.

The American director and writer divulged: 'Idris is pretty much becoming a national treasure for every country. We couldn't have done it without him.

'It was a pleasure, he's a gentleman. I can't wait to see him as James Bond quite frankly.'

This comes after BBC apologised after Orlando Bloom uttered an offensive slur while being interviewed by Nick Grimshaw live on Radio One last week.

The actor said the word 'pikey' on the show, which is a derogatory word used for a gypsy or traveller.

A BBC spokesperson told MailOnline: 'As with any live broadcast, we take great care to ensure all guests are briefed about their language before going on air.

'We apologised to listeners afterwards for any offence caused.'

The word was used when Orlando was asked by Nick about whether or not he does his own stunts.

He replied: 'I'm still a pikey from Kent, boy. I'm still a pikey from Kent. You don't want to get on the wrong side of me, boy.'

Orlando has since defended himself, saying that he meant no harm.

He told the BBC after the chat: 'I've come from Kent and I grew up with a lot of, like, freewheeling, cool, interesting characters like that

'I certainly wasn't taking a slant at that at all. I'm very respectful.'

Grimmy concluded: 'Great to have him on the show, but apologies if you were offended by anything that Orlando may have said earlier on.'

Twitter went wild for the furore with mixed reactions. They said things like: 'If Orlando Bloom is a pikey from Kent then I am too x.'
