His Vietnamese girlfriend Chea Sokthy, 27, was also arrested at his apartment after being accused of procuring the youngsters.

Yesterday, the pair appeared at the The Phnom Penh Municipal Court where they were both charged and remanded at the Prey Sar prison to await trial.

Court spokesman Y Rin said Cressy had been charged with purchasing child prostitution while Sokthy with soliciting child prostitution.

He said a trial would take place later this year but a date had not yet been set.

Keo Thea, the Phnom Penh municipal anti-human trafficking police chief, said they had been following Cressy for a number of months.

The doctor entered and left Cambodia a number of times during the investigation, police said.

Cressy was arrested last week as he ate a sandwich in a shopping area of Phnom Penh known as the Russian Market.

He was then ordered to lead child-protection police officers to his apartment where up to a dozen police searched suitcases, cupboards, drawers and allegedly found a number of sex toys - as well as 'normal' toys that could be used to keep children entertained.

Also seized were computers and still and video cameras.

It is understood that inquiries are continuing into other possible child victims.

A Cambodian news portal, NKD news, quoted on the expatriate website Khmer440, claimed that Cressy had been in Cambodia for a while as a tourist.

He was described as being a qualified doctor living in Phnom Penh where he allegedly abused the children but it is believed he has actually retired.

Police had reportedly been investigating him for some time after receiving complaints from the mothers of the girls who had allegedly been abused.

According to NKD news, Cressy paid the 14-year-old $3,000 for her virginity while the younger girls were paid $200 to $300 to perform sex acts and for him being able to inappropriately touch them.

At his address, it is being alleged, police found Viagra, lubricants, sex toys and a number of pairs of girls' shoes.

Because newspaper articles are in the Cambodian language, expatriates have asked for translations and learned from one that Cressy allegedly contacted someone to find and buy the four young girls and take them to his apartment.

A company check shows a Hove address for 'Dr Clive Robert Kingsley Cressy'.

He is listed on line as being a qualified translator in Swedish and his personal reading interests are children's literature, fiction and non-fiction works.

He has interests in film, printing and publishing and tv, and his medical interests are in oncology, orthopaedics and radiology.
