Dressing for official royal duties doesn't have to involve prim dresses and nude court shoes, as Queen Letizia of Spain proved this morning. 

The royal, 44, added edge to her look in a figure hugging leather pencil skirt, teamed with a white blouse as she arrived at an engagement in Madrid. 

Her knee length number showed off the mother-of-two's toned legs, which she elongated further with black heels.

She completed the monochrome look with a black laser cut clutch bag.

The royal was joined by her husband King Felipe who added a touch of flair to his navy ensemble with a magenta tie

Letizia was attending the opening of  the 'Escripta. Tesoros Manuscritos de la Universidad de Salamanca' exhibition at the National Library.

She was accompanied by her husband King Felipe, 49, who looked handsome in a navy suit, adding a splash of vivid colour with a magenta tie. 

The royals received a warm welcome from library staff as they prepared to tour the collection of important manuscripts from the University of Salamanca. 

It's been a busy week so far for the Spanish Queen, who yesterday attended the opening day of the 12th International Seminar of Language and Journalism in San Millan de la Cogolla, La Rioja.

The Spanish queen looked engaged as she spoke with other officials outside the monastery where the event was held before taking part in the seminar.

Queen Letizia reported on international news events during her journalism career, including reporting from New York in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

She also worked for broadcasters including Bloomberg and TVE.

Letizia, who is mother to Princess Leonor, 11 and Princess Sofía, nine, swapped her journalism career for royal duties when she wed King Felipe VI in 2004.

She was previously married to Alonso Guerrero Pérez, a writer, but the pair divorced after just a year.
