'So disrespectful!' Museum donors slam stars like Bella Hadid, Dakota Johnson and Frances Bean Cobain for smoking inside at the Met Gala - and call for them all to be FINED

  • The New York City Smoke-Free Air Act prohibits smoking in nearly all indoor workplaces, and calls for a fine of $200 to $400 for first-time violators
  • Celebrities including Marc Jacobs, Behati Prinsloo, and Rami Malek were seen smoking in images shared on social media
  • The stars were feet away from priceless works of art, a fact many are calling disrespectful
  • Donors have called for the stars to be fined, and a board member complained directly to Anna Wintour at the event

Board members and donors at the Metropolitan Museum of Art are not thrilled — to put it lightly — that so many celebrities were lighting up at the Met Gala on Monday night.

Smoking was banned in New York's restaurants, bars, and commercial establishments in 2003, but quite a few celebrity smokers seemed to think they were above

the law at the fancy fete earlier this week, with a crowd slipping into the ladies' room to puff away throughout the party.

Now, according to Page 6, several Met VIPs are calling for stars like Bella Hadid, Dakota Johnson, Behati Prinsloo, Marc Jacobs, and Frances Bean Cobain to be fined — and at least one complained directly to Anna Wintour on the big night.

'As a donor to the Met, I was so insulted to see all these "celebrities" smoking and taking selfies of themselves in the bathroom,' a source told Page Six. 'Mostly, i'’s disrespectful to the art collection, which needs to be kept 100% smoke-free. I would honestly like to see these people fined by the city.'

The New York City Smoke-Free Air Act prohibits smoking in nearly all indoor workplaces, and calls for a fine of $200 to $400 for first-time violators.

Second violation within the first year carry a $500 to $1,000 fine, while third or subsequent violations within a year carry a$1,000 to $2,000 fine.

In addition to Bella, Dakota, Behati, Marc, and Frances Bean, several other revelers were seen with cigarettes in hand in pictures and video that have gone up on social media.

Mr. Robot actor Rami Malek was puffing in one snap, as was Slick Woods and a few men in tuxes.

When the pictures and video surfaced on Tuesday, many social media users — and DailyMail.com commenters — were outraged by the stars' behavior, noting that they were releasing chemicals and smoke into the air incredibly close to many priceless works of art.

'Hold them accountable and fine them,' wrote one. Another added: 'What "classy" people. Lets hope they'll be hit with a fine. That bathroom must stink to high heavens. Absolutely gross.'

Beside the complaining donor, a female board member at the Met was outraged by the behavior, and took it up with Vogue editor Anna Wintour herself.

'The board member stormed right out [of the bathroom] and complained right away to Anna Wintour's team. It is so disrespectful to the museum,' a source told the Post.

Besides smoking openly in the bathroom at the museum, many stars took no pains to hide the behavior on social media.

Indoor smoking was first banned in NYC in 2003, and the law was later expanded to include public beaches and parks.
