Pictures taken after the accident show the family's items strewn across the tracks and nearby roads.

Mercado was moving the family's belongings from the Georgia suburb to Florida, according to WSBTV.

The driver said he stayed in the truck until the last minute to try to save the family's items.

'My wife jumped out of the truck, she's screaming at me to get out... I'm just trying to save the truck,' he told the network, before adding police officers on the scene were also telling him to abandon the vehicle.

Norcross Police Department said there were traffic delays for hours after the accident, and posted this picture on Facebook

'As soon as I jumped out of the truck, maybe four or five seconds later, the impact with the trailer, with the train with the trailer.'

There is a 'no trucks' sign on the crossing, however Mercado did not spot it until it was too late. The GPS-device he was using said to cross the tracks.
