Matthew Macfadyen looks every inch the dapper Edwardian gent as he films BBC remake of Howards End in Surrey

He's a BAFTA award winning actor known for his role as undercover agent Tom Quinn in the BBC spy drama Spooks.

And Matthew Macfadyen looked just as compelling as he marched down a gravel path in behind the scenes snaps of a new BBC's drama - dubbed by some as the next Downton Abbey.

Matthew is playing the role of Henry Wilcox for the glamorous BBC adaptation of E.M. Forster's classic 1910 novel Howards End.

The dark TV drama explores the changing landscape of social and class divisions in turn of the century England through the tales of three families.

Dressed in a black pea coat over a matching tailored waistcoat with a white cutaway collar shirt and black tie.

The gold chain of a pocket watch tucked into his waistcoat was on display providing a colourful juxtaposition to the ensemble.

While a smart side-parting hair-do completed the dapper Edwardian look.

Hayley Atwell was also spotted filming the BBC miniseries in London on Friday.   

Animated Hayley, 35, gesticulated wildly as she had a discussion with Tracey, 57. 

Both were dressed in period costumes from the turn-of-the-century, when the E.M. Forster novel is set. 

The Captain America actress wore her chestnut hair in a bun, with strands escaping the intricate style at the nape of her neck. 

Hayley looked in high spirits as she sported a delicate pair of drop earrings with a green and pink checked blouse and a scarlet neck tie.

Her waist was cinched with an intricate silver belt and the actress wore a deep purple skirt, which grazed her ankles. 

Comic Tracey was spotted walking alongside Hayley in a long purple jacket with puffball sleeves. 

She also wore her hair swept into a bun and paired her jacket with a royal blue and black blouse pinned with a floral brooch.

She also wore a grey skirt, with buttons at the side, and a pair of black period boots. 

The pair were pictured walking around a London park and Tracey listened while Hayley talked. 

They are starring together in an adaptation of the 1910 novel Howards End.

The book, which was written by E.M. Forster, follows the lives of three families; the upper class Wilcoxes, the middle class Schlegels and the lower class Basts. 

In the four-part series, Hayley plays Margaret Schlegel, who is bequeathed the house, Howards End, by friend Ruth Wilcox.

Unaware of her inheritance, she befriends and later falls in love with the late Ruth's husband, Henry, played by Matthew McFadyean.

Tracey Ullman plays Aunt Juley, who helps to advise and counsel her nieces. 

The book was adapted into a 1992 Merchant Ivory film starring Emma Thompson, who plays Margaret Schlegel. 

Tracey Ullman's character was played by Fawlty Towers' Prunella Scales.
