Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said: 'The baby's mother was able to stop the attack, but the baby had already suffered significant injuries.'

The mother was the only adult in the house at the time, police said.

She called 911 and traveled with the child in an ambulance to Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center, where the baby was later pronounced dead.

Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said: 'It's an absolute, true tragedy.'

Yellow crime-scene tape blocked off the street where the family live, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

The investigation indicated the incident appears to be a tragic accident, and no criminal charges are anticipated.

Clark County Animal Control Officers took custody of the dog involved. The dog has been been quarantined for 10 days but it could end up euthanized.

A police spokesman said: 'Parents, guardians and caretakers are reminded to supervise interactions between family pets and small children.'
