Hugo Lloris is in a race against time to be fit for the start of the season after returning to pre-season training with a broken wrist.

The France international reported back for pre-season training with his Tottenham team-mates on Monday - but his participation will be severely restricted due to the fracture.

There are fears Lloris could miss up to three months, which would rule him out of the opening weeks of the forthcoming campaign.

Despite the injury Lloris has joined his team-mates in their pre-season fitness regime and the club tweeted an image of him wearing a protective wrist strap, wrist taking part in a reaction drill.

Spurs spent Monday trying to establish the seriousness of the fracture, and are keeping their fingers crossed for a quick recovery period.

Nevertheless, Lloris looks set to miss the curtain-raiser against Manchester United on August 8 at the very least.

Lloris will continue to report for pre-season training with the rest of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

However, the goalkeeper will not be able to complete any form of contact training until he’s given the all clear from medical staff, but will continue to work on his fitness.

The news could even have implications for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who views Lloris as a contender to replace David De Gea, who is wanted by Real Madrid.

The injury may force the Dutch manager into re-evaluating his targets ahead of De Gea’s potential exit.

A Spurs statement confirmed: ‘The club can confirm that Hugo Lloris has sustained a fractured wrist during the close season period.

‘The France goalkeeper will continue to work alongside the First Team squad to build up his fitness in a bid to be ready for the start of the season.

‘Our medical team will continue to monitor his rehabilitation and progress during pre-season.’
