A spokeswoman confirmed to CNN that the first lady 'does not wear fur', but they didn't give the exact date she stopped wearing it as Trump has been spotted several times donning fur in the past.

In 2003, she accompanied her husband and now president, Donald Trump, to the opening of fur designer Dennis Basso's Manhattan boutique and again in 2007, she wore a black fur hat to a Michael Kors fashion show.

Former New York Times critical shopper, Cintra Wilson, wrote an article in March recalling the time when she tried on a black lambskin gown that the now first lady had purchased in 2011.

Wilson claims in the article that she believed the Couture dress cost 'somewhere in the $30,000 to $40,000 range'.

PETA also expressed their gratitude for Trump's fur-free decision.

'Years ago, Melania first attended a PETA fashion show that featured one of her favorite designers, Marc Bouwer, a longtime PETA supporter who doesn’t use fur, leather, or exotic skins in his collections.

'We’re ecstatic that the first lady has taken a stand against the violent killing of animals for their fur. We thank her for leading by example so that no one should have to die for fashion,' the organization added.
