Nineties survivors Cast are at odds with current trends, but they wisely avoid turning the clock back to Britpop on their second album since reuniting in 2012. You cant live your life in the past, sings John Power on the excellent Paper Chains. Lean, simple songs dominate, with Further Down The Road revisiting the skiffle edge of Powers old band The Las.

Gods Problem Child (Legacy)

Willie Nelson turned 84 in April, but the old outlaw isnt slowing down. His ninth album in five years is dominated by sly rockers and beautiful ballads that steer clear of country cliche. He marks the passing time with good humour, poking fun at false reports of his passing on Still Not Dead: The internet said I had passed away, but if I died I wasnt dead to stay.

Northern Lights (Decca)

Norwegian choir Cantus sang on the Disney film Frozen and this debut album delves even deeper into traditional Nordic music. The 32-strong female ensemble from Trondheim are accompanied by strings, bells, harp and piano, but their eerie harmonies take centre stage. The songs range from folk pieces to Enya-style moodiness and will have a certain niche appeal, though theyre too wintry for late spring.

Cover Stories (Legacy)

American singer Brandi Carlile marks the tenth anniversary of her album The Story by inviting other singers to cover its songs. Pride of place goes to Adele, whose previously released take on weepie ballad Hiding My Heart is an emotional tour de force. The rest is patchy, with downbeat acoustics prominent, although Kris Kristofferson and Dolly Parton both impress and Pearl Jam add welcome rock n roll muscle on Again Today.

Joan Shelley (No Quarter)

Theres an understated power to this fourth album by Kentucky singer-songwriter Joan Shelley, whose eloquent tunes are sympathetically helmed by producer Jeff Tweedy, of U.S. band Wilco. If The Storms Never Came owes something to the crisp, Brit-folk guitars of Pentangle and Fairport Convention. The jazzy Push And Pull charts the evolving undercurrents of a new relationship.

Out on vinyl for tomorrows Record Store Day, this classic album is expanded into a double LP with six unreleased songs, including a heartfelt Your Song and the gospel ballad Border Song. Taken from a New York radio broadcast, it captures the energy and verve of a superstar in waiting. It is one of Eltons finest performances.
