Joss Whedon separated from his wife Kai Cole five years ago.

While they had been married for 17 years, the Buffy The Vampire Killer scribe filed for divorce back on December 6, 2012.

The official documents list the date of separation as eight months prior on April 20, 2012, according to US Weekly.

The 52-year-old Avengers director cited irreconcilable differences.

Whedon asked for joint legal and physical custody of the kids with his producer/actress wife.

Together, they share 14-year-old Arden Avery and 12-year-old Squire Annelee.

The proceedings were halted until August 2014, when the couple filed a request asking for certain documents to remain confidential.

After a few more years in legal limbo, the couple hired divorce attorneys and 'filed a sudden declaration for a default dissolution.'

The filing claimed the couple had 'entered into a written agreement regarding their property and their marriage or domestic partnership rights, including support.'

The couple kept a low profile throughout these proceedings as many recent articles and interviews claim Cole is still married to Whedon.
