It is a rarity that a member of the royal family is able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage during an engagement.

So when the opportunity arose during her visit to Exeter on Thursday afternoon Sophie Wessex could not resist indulging in a small tipple.

The Countess of Wessex, 52,  enjoyed a glass of local cider while visiting the Devon County Show in Exeter.

It seems that the mother-of-two was in especially high spirits today as she could be seen enjoying a joke with fellow visitors to the fair.

The wife of Prince Edward fully embraced her trip to the countryside on Thursday opting for a more dressed down look compared to her usual tailored finish.

Sophie wore a graphic print skirt in shades of blue paired with a brown waxed jacket.

Adding a touch of glamour to her more casual ensemble Sophie wore a pair of gold earrings studded with diamonds.  

Pinned to her royal highness' coat was a badge that read 'President of the Devon County Agricultural Association'.

Sophie was elected president of the Devon County Show in January this year as a keen supporter of British Agriculture.

The honour was bestowed upon her on the same day as her 52nd birthday and members of the board presented her with a cake as part of the occasion.

Speaking at the time of her election Sophie said: 'I am honoured and delighted to be President of The Devon County Agricultural Association this year. 

'Supporting our farmers and the industry is a priority for me in my work and I very much look forward to my role with this unique part of our country and its special agricultural show.'
