Hundreds of mourners turn out for memorial service of ESPN host Chris Berman's wife Katherine one week after her tragic death in a car wreck

Hundreds of mourners gathered at a memorial service for ESPN host Chris Berman's wife on Wednesday.

Katherine Ann, 67, died on May 9 in a two-car crash in Woodbury, Connecticut after the Lexus she was driving rear-ended the vehicle of Edward Bertulis.

Katherine's car veered off the road and over an embankment before landing upside down in a small body of water. She was immediately pronounced dead and Bertulis also died.

It was the day before her husband of 34 years celebrated his 62nd birthday.

Family, friends and colleagues - approximately 500 - congregated at Seymour St John Chapel, on the campus of Choate Rosemary Hall, to honor her memory.

A steady flow of guests arrived at the chapel about a half hour in advance of the service, which began at 1pm.

Multiple guests spoke during the service, which lasted about an hour, with Chris, in a Hawaiian lei, being the last to speak, reported the Hartford Courant.

According to her obituary Katherine had a particular fondness for West Maui in Hawaii and Captiva Island on the Florida Gulf Coast.

He spoke for about 15 minutes, describing his wife's life journey and their life together.

Dozens of sports figures publicly shared sympathy and support for Chris online shortly after Katherine's death including Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin and Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz.

Chris and Katherine married in 1983 and have two children, Meredith and Douglas.

The obituary in The Cheshire Herald noted Katherine's as lover of botany and her fondness of two places in particular, West Maui in Hawaii and Captiva Island on the Florida Gulf Coast.

Chris is a six-time national sportscaster of the year who began his career at ESPN just one month after its 1979 launch. 

Nicknamed Boomer, he is most famous for his hosting gigs on SportsCenter and Sunday NFL Countdown.

In January, the network announced a new role for the semi-retired Berman, who has transitioned from being the face of the network's NFL coverage.

However, he is scheduled to be included in coverage surrounding the Super Bowl and a radio play-by-play role for the MLB playoffs.
