Oxford student, 24, spared jail for stabbing Tinder lover

Lavinia Woodward spends much of her time at her mother's stunning Italian villa, perched on a hill surrounded by pines, a few miles from Lake Como. Her father, who also went to Oxford, is a senior oil company executive. The same Lavinia Woodward appeared in the dock at Oxford Crown Court this week. The charge: unlawful wounding ('when a person unlawfully and maliciously, either wounds another person or inflicts grievous bodily harm upon another person'). Woodward had met a young Cambridge graduate on an online dating site. During a drink and drug-fuelled row last September, she punched him and swiped at him with a bread knife, stabbed him in the leg then hurled a laptop at him, followed by a glass and a jam jar. The offence, to which she pleaded guilty, would normally mean a custodial term, he said, but he delayed sentencing for four months and hinted Woodward would not be jailed, giving her time to prove she was conquering her cocaine habit.

Book claims elites in UK are encouraging mass immigration

Journalist Douglas Murray (top right) writes in his new book The Strange Death Of Europe (bottom right) that our political leaders have knowingly colluded in the 'mass movement of peoples into Europe'. Second, he believes Europe's intellectual and cultural elites, including those in Britain, have 'lost faith in its beliefs, traditions and legitimacy'. Crippled with guilt, obsessed with atoning for the sins of empire, they have lost sight of the historic Christian values that their people expect them to defend. As a result of their deluded utopianism, Murray thinks, Europe is ceasing to be Europe.

Trump to 'strongly protect American interests' on tour

President Donald Trump has departed on a five-stop diplomacy tour through Europe and the Middle East that will cover 15,600 miles in the air over the course of nine days. The president, the first lady Melania Trump, Chief of staff Reince Priebus, Jared Kushner, and Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka, left the White House aboard Marine One just before 2pm Eastern. Fifteen minutes later, the group arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The first couple stopped and waved as they boarded Air Force One. They are currently on a 12-hour flight to Saudi Arabia. The last four U.S. presidents kept their first international voyages confined to North America. Not so for Trump. He will deliver a high-stakes speech about Islam in the heart of Saudi Arabia, meet with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his nemesis Mahmoud Abbas and take in an audience with Pope Francis. And that's before a NATO summit and a meeting of the G7 leaders. Trump said Friday, after a quiet morning at the White House he was 'getting ready for my big foreign trip.' On Thursday - shortly before Mrs May launched her Conservative manifesto - he told viewers that he had asked for an interview with Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. 'But the Conservative Party, or Mrs May's advisers, are blocking interviews to Sky News by senior ministers. Instead, he gave an interview to the BBC,' Mr Boulton said.

Behind the scenes at 'Britain's worst school'

Following its latest Ofsted inspection, Willenhall E-ACT Academy (inset) in Walsall, West Midlands, has found itself dubbed one of the 'worst schools' in Britain. While its GCSE exam results are poor enough - only 40 per cent managed a C or better in English and maths, well below the national average of almost 60 per cent - the main point of criticism was the shockingly bad behaviour of its pupils (stock photograph). Or, more precisely, the bad behaviour of those pupils who bother to turn up - one-third regularly play truant. Did being dressed as a girl leave Hemingway confused?

Few mothers were prouder of their little children than Grace Hemingway. The former opera singer loved to fill family photo albums with pictures of her twin daughters, so pretty in lacy dresses, pink bows and page-boy haircuts. The only problem was she didn't really have twin daughters - for one of the two in the picture was young Ernest Hemingway (centre). He had been forced to dress in gingham frocks and crocheted bonnets and wear his hair in a shoulder-length bob to match his older sister Marcelline. Ernest didn't get a haircut until he was six. Tough, independent women scared Hemingway, who preferred those who were more 'daughterly'. Hemingway is pictured left with third wife Martha and top right in 1950.

Had the safety posts not been there to stop the speeding car, there were dozens of pedestrians just feet away on the other side who would have been mowed down in the deadly attack. Moments earlier, the crazed driver killed an 18-year-old girl from Michigan as his car careered along the busy sidewalk. Dion Leonard (left and inset with Gobi the dog) was competing in a 115-mile ultra-marathon in China when Gobi, a stray dog, appeared and started to run the race with him. After he finished the race, he decided to take her back home to Edinburgh - but several hurdles cropped up along the way, nearly preventing the pair from staying together. Here, Mr Leonard recalls the moment he met and fell in love with a stray dog, who is now 'part of the family'.

First fighter ace of WWII was Polish war hero

Stanislaw Skalski (left and right) is believed to have downed 22 enemy aircraft and became only the second ever Polish Operating Commander of an RAF squadron. Skalski had the distinction of being the first Allied ace of the Second World War, with a confirmed four individual and one shared victory during the Polish Campaign of 1939. In 1940 he fought in the Battle of Britain for 501 Squadron, where he shot down four planes. He was also shot down himself and bailed out with severe burns, which hospitalised him for six weeks. Skalski's wartime achievements, as well as his post-war persecution, make him arguably the most distinguished of all Polish airmen and an icon of the country's Air Force.

The moment a cyclist miraculously cheats death after being sent flying by a careless motorist and smacking head first into the bonnet of a second car

Footage of the horrifying crash from three different angles shows the cyclist, above, crunch sickeningly into a bonnet before jumping straight to his feet in Severskaya, southwest Russia. In the short clip, a driver indicates left to make a turn off the main carriageway and onto a smaller road. The driver comes to a stop, pausing to let the traffic in the opposite lane clear so that he can cross the junction. He does not appear to see the cyclist travelling down the carriageway, and seems to hesitate before suddenly springing into action. As the cyclist comes level with the car, the vehicle makes his turn, ploughing side-on into the rider.
