'I'm a little bit scared': Baywatch hunk Zac Efron steps out of his acting comfort zone to play NOTORIOUS serial killer Ted Bundy

He is currently starring on the reboot of '90s TV show Baywatch.

But Zac Efron will be tackling a much darker subject matter for his next role, when he climbs inside the mind of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. 

Known for his more lighthearted and comedic gigs in High School Musical and Bad Neighbours, Zac told Pedestrian this week that he was 'scared' to take on the new role.

'Honestly I don't know how to explain it,' he said. 'I'm kind of scared, a little bit nervous - it's exactly the kind of thing  I like when I'm heading into a new project.'

Variety reported on Monday that Zac would star in the film that currently has the working title of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.

Speaking to the publication, producer Nicolas Chartier said that he believed Zac was 'perfect' for the part.

 'I have been trying to work with Zac Efron for a long time,' he said.

'From his dramatic turn in Paperboy to his hilarious performance in Neighbours, he continues to impress audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary versatility and range. We couldn't be more excited to see him in this amazing role.

With his true victim count still unknown, Ted was executed by electric chair in Florida in 1989.

In Australia to promote Baywatch this week, Zac revealed on Friday's The Project that he was 'in love' with the country.

'I've fallen in love with Australia and the fans out here, the people, the culture, the beach,' Zac said. '(I've) made great friends over the years here. I kind of sneak over here on my own time as well'.
