'I didn't want a number': Tom Cruise reveals Top Gun sequel will be called Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise continues to take our breath away.

The A-lister on Friday said his long-awaited sequel to 1986's action film Top Gun will be called Top Gun: Maverick.

'I didn’t want a number, you know what I mean?' the 54-year-old told Access Hollywood while in London on the promotional trail for his current summer thriller, The Mummy. 'You don't need a number.'

The A-list stalwart hyped the film in saying, 'We're going to have the same tone we did in the first one ... aviators are back, the need for speed.

'We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one - it’s going to be in the same vein as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.'

Cruise played coy when asked about who would be co-starring with him in the sequel, as the original featured Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis and Anthony Edwards, with Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan in the extended cast.

'There’s gonna be aircraft carriers,' he wisecracked. 'There’s gonna be jets.'

Cruise said he was 'very excited' about the forthcoming movie, which begins shooting in 2018.

While on the junket, Cruise told Extra that he considers himself to be 'a total romantic' when it comes to dating.

'I like a walk through the park,' the perennial heartthrob said. 'I like all that stuff, you know? I really love traveling. I love, love traveling.'

Speaking with the outlet, Cruise said that he calls his on-set gym facility 'the pain cave,' with a no-nonsense message of encouragement hearkening visitors. 

'That’s the workout room we have,' he said. 'I call it the "pain cave," and underneath it says, "Only the motivated may enter."'

Cruise said he's 'always fit or trained' as a man dedicated to his craft.

'Just making movies, you’ve got to be fit. I feel for myself, I’ve got to just take care of myself - making movies, it’s my passion.'
