Sergio Aguero’s dreadful challenge and subsequent suspension could have a huge bearing on the Premier League title race.

The Man City striker was shown a red card for his wild tackle on David Luiz in his side’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea and, having already been suspended already this season, will be banned for four games.

It means Pep Guardiola will be without his top scorer for the Premier League matches against Leicester, Arsenal, Watford and Hull.

So influential is the Argentinean his absence could have a huge impact on Man City’s results – but it could also affect some of their title contenders.

Man City are due to play Arsenal on 18 December and the Gunners will be delighted Aguero will play no part. The striker has scored against Arsenal every season he’s been in English football except one. No Aguero should be a big boost to Arsenal’s chances at the Etihad.

In contrast the suspension doesn’t work out so well for Liverpool. Aguero will return in the New Year’s Eve meeting at Anfield and his previous returns to action are ominous. When he was suspended earlier this season he returned against Swansea and scored two goals. When he spent over a month on the sidelines across October and November last season he returned to action in a game against Liverpool – and scored. In addition, Aguero enjoys scoring against Liverpool having (like against Arsenal) done so every season he’s been in the Premier League bar one.
