'I would say I was an alcoholic': Sam Taylor-Johnson, 50, reveals how she drank 'to blackout' during her first marriage to Jay Jopling as she gives an insight into life with new husband Aaron, 26

She proved love has no age when she wed Aaron, 24 years her junior, in 2012.   

And Sam Taylor-Johnson, 50, has revealed she drank herself 'to blackout' during her first marriage to Jay Jopling. 

The director spoke to the Sunday Times Magazine about her struggle with alcohol before she quit in 2001.

She said: 'I would drink to blackout most nights. I would say I was an alcoholic, I put myself in supremely dangerous situations.' 

Sam, who was married to art dealer Jay from 1997 to 2008, stopped drinking and 'calmed down' after she recovered from colon and breast cancer. 

The artist also gushed about her second husband Aaron, 26, who she met on the set of the 2009 film Nowhere Boy.

She said: 'He was very intense and absolutely mind made-up.'

The director revealed how the pair work so well together. 

She said: 'We're in such sync. We spend every minute of every day together.' 

The couple, who have a 23-year age gap, raised eyebrows when they first started dating. 

Sam said it was Aaron, then 18, who encouraged her to be brave and to not hesitate about their relationship.

The couple now share two children together - Wylda Rae, six, and Romy Hero, four.

Aaron is, in fact, so besotted with his family that he says he is tempted to give up his career in order to focus on being a dad to his young daughters.

In an interview with Mr Porter magazine, Aaron claimed he gets 'more fulfillment from being a father.'

'I'm still constantly wanting to give [acting] up,' he revealed.

As for his marriage, he revealed: 'I just feel secure and loved and safe. We have this very deep connection. We're just in sync.'

Sam rose to prominence in the 1990s when she became known for her photography. 

She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1998 and was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in 2002. 

Avengers star Aaron got his big break in 2008 chick flick Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging and later achieved international fame in 2010 comedy Kick Ass.
