Woman says her apartment has become infested by RATS and that her landlord won't fix the problem but the building manager blames the tenant for not cleaning

  • Vernessa Sylvester says she first found rats in her home in October 
  • She claims to have informed her landlord but says the apartment manager only tried to poison the rats once 
  • Meanwhile, the apartment manager says they have tried to fix the problem but couldn't cover holes in the walls because the apartment was not clean
  • Maintenance workers have also not been able to work in the home due to a large dog

A Houston, Texas woman says she has suffered for months in a rat infested apartment while her landlord refuses to help. 

But the owner of the apartment building says tenant Vernessa Sylvester has been uncooperative in their eradication efforts. 

In an interview with CW39, Sylvester says she first noticed the rat problem in October, when she spotted three rats hanging out on top of her pantry door.

She says she took a picture of the rats and sent it to her apartment manager, but says the landlord has only tried to poison the rats once. 

'The whole apartment is rat infested,' Sylvester said. 'I have rats in my a.c. I cannot cook because the stove is full of rats, when you put it on it smells like rat poop and urine.'  

'She gave me rat four green palats, they ate it like cheese, I haven’t found a dead rat yet,' said Sylvester.

Sylvester says she now has to cook her meals on a hot plate in her kitchen because the rats have infiltrated her stove

Sylvester lives at the Marinette Gardens Apartments in southwest Houston, and has file a complaint with the city. 

She says the problem is so bad that rats have infested her stove and she has to cook on a hot plate in her living room.  

The apartment manager spoke to the same news station, giving quite a different version of events. 

The apartment manager says that maintenance tried to cover holes in the walls but that they could not make the repairs because of filth in the apartment. 

They also have been prevented from doing further work in the apartment because of an intimidating big dog.
